Dr Tinashe Goronga is a General Medical Officer at Binga District Hospital in Zimbabwe.
At medical school he attended a Social Medicine course in Uganda offered by Socmed Global, where participants explored social and cultural issues beyond the biological basis of disease, health equity and addressing structural causes of disease .
The course had a huge impact on Dr Goronga’s career development and sparked an interest in global health and social justice. He went on to do his internship at Mpilo hospital in Bulawayo.
Whilst in Bulawayo he had the opportunity to support Sexual Rights Centre, a local organisation that works with sex workers and sexual minorities and still serves as a board member .
After his internship he decided to work at Binga District Hospital in Matebeleland North. Binga District is beautiful and on the lakeshore of Lake Kariba.
Matebeleland North is the poorest province according to the 2016 Zimbabwe Poverty Survey and probably one of the areas most affected by the current economic crisis. Dr Goronga felt this was where his services would be most needed.
On the global health front he is part of the Social Medicine Consortium (SMC) which is a network of individuals, institutions and organisations who advocate for social justice, health equity and transforming health professional education with social medicine at the core .
He currently serves on the global leadership of SMC’s Global Campaign Against Racism which seeks to address structural racism and its impact on health. He intends to pursue a career in global and public health, focusing on transforming health systems and policies to promote an equity centred approach.
ZHTS past and present leadership continue to support and mentor Dr Goronga.
