Tirivanhu Community Mental Health Home, Tariro Mental Health Home and Beatrice Road Mental Health Home People living with mental illness in Zimbabwe are particularly affected by economic challenges, trauma, domestic violence and disturbing levels of poverty. Their life expectancy is much lower than the wider population. They are also at greater risk of exposure to infectious diseases such as COVID-19 We are raising money to support three community mental health homes  in Zimbabwe that support 50 residents. Training to support local midwives in Binga

Training to support local midwives in Binga

Paediatrician Dr Tsitsi Chawatama, with the support of Dorcas Gwata and some local staff, ran a training update with 14 local nurses and midwives on caring for unwell newborns. This training was to support babies born with low birthweight, breathing problems and infection and help save babies lives. There is no specialist neonatal unit at the hospital so midwives, paediatric nurses and family medicine nurses need these skills to be able to support critically ill babies. At the end of the training each participant received a workbook/manual summarising the training content with access to training resources to support future training.

Mental health training March 2017

In March 2017 Public health nurse and Trustee of ZHTS Dorcas Gwata, facilitated a number of workshops and teaching sessions in Zimbabwe. Nurses and students at Chitungwiza, Parirenyatwa and Ingutsheni attended training sessions on the management of psychosis, anxiety and depression including safeguarding.
